"My 35th birthday was really special.
There were around 150 people and we raved like raving was going out of fashion!" |
I’ve had lots of birthday parties, including an 18th, 21st and a really memorable 19th!
My 25th year is most significant. This is when I came out as a lesbian to my best friend and my mother and then moved out of home into a Stonewall hostel, London.
Here I made a lot of friends, including many other black lesbians. I had a massive party and slept with a woman for the first time on the night of my 25th birthday party. This was my present to me!
My 35th was also really special. There were around 150 people and we raved like raving was going out of fashion!
It was a traditional good old fashioned house party. I received so many gifts.
My friend performed as a male drag artist as a surprise. Everyone was amazed and screamed. It was a really special night because all of my good friends, who were predominantly black, gay lesbians came. Even one’s who weren’t ‘out’.

My mum, aunt, brother and other family members were there also. Everyone had a good time and was talking about it for ages.
I wanted to keep the party female-orientated. There were 2 female Asian DJs who were sisters. It was their first gig. They played hip-hop, soul, reggae, soca, bashment, and 80s pop - a great mix. They even played some jazz tracks at the end of the night.I don’t drink alcohol but I made special rum Bajan punch!
My mum served the food and my aunt and two of my cousins served drinks throughout the night. Most of my family didn’t know about my sexuality until that point but theywere cool. I gave away around 50 food parcels, there was so much food.
I even had a dinner party the following week to get rid of some of the food in the freezer and all the booze.
The neighbours threatened to call the police but my brother was a sergeant for the area at the time, and said that he would not attend to any call outs! I had to kick people out at 9am.
I also kicked everyone out at my 19th birthday party because someone decided to cut and eat half of my massive, 21 inch love heart cake. I was so vexed!
Last year I had to cancel my 40th with just days to go because I fell very ill.
